WEEK ONE GAME SUMMARIES

Rockingham County 20, Southwest Guilford 0

At Wentworth, the Cougars defense pitched a shutout and three first-half touchdowns were enough for Rockingham County to win its season opener.

A blocked punt by Chris Thomas ended Southwest's opening possession and set up Rockingham's first touchdown a few plays later as Blane Garrett broke through the middle from inside the 10-yard line at the 7-minute mark of the first quarter.

The Cougars made it 14-0 with 8:29 before halftime when quarterback Jayden Maletich connected with Alex Bolden on a 15-yard TD pass. Bolden made a great grab and kept his feet inbounds at the right back corner of the end zone. A pass from Charlie Robertson to Lake Mabe added the 2-point conversion.

Rockingham posted its third TD just before halftime, managing the 2-minute clock to perfection. Zaylen Hargrove reached the end zone on a 3-yard run with 0:17 on the clock.

Rockingham's defense posted a pair of takeaways – a fumble recovery by Zykale Ruff and an interception by Bolden, who returned it 55-yards for a touchdown only to have it negated by a penalty.

Southwest managed few yards on the ground but found some success on pass plays. The closest the Cowboys came to scoring was on the game's final play when a pass play took the ball inside the 10 as time ran out.

Reidsville 27, Northern Guilford 20

At Northern, Reidsville rallied from a 13-6 halftime deficit to build a 27-13 lead. Northern scored with less than a minute to go to close the final margin.

Northeast Guilford 46, Morehead 12

At McLeansville, Northeast Guilford led 24-12 at the half and pulled away in the second half.
